BIOENGINEERING

After centuries of trying to control nature with man-made materials, man is beginning to realize that using nature to control nature may be his best option. Utilizing these principles, Beran Environmental Services, Inc has been involved in stream creation and streambank stabilization projects that include the design and/or installation of:

  • Wattles
  • Live stakes
  • Dormant Posts
  • Crib walls
  • Longitudinal Peaked Stone Toe Protection
  • Rootwads
  • Live Siltation
Many of these methods of bioengineering have been combined in the Grove City Upper Dam project. Along the streambank a crib wall was installed with a rootwad to protect the up-stream edge of the wall. This area was then further armored with boulders to prevent the possibility of the structure washing out. In addition, to provide longterm stream bank stabilization, willow and dogwood live stakes were planted.

A live-stake which has successfully rooted A completed crib-wall which is being protected from erosive flows by a rootwad and has been live-staked to provide long terms streambank restoration.
