One way to determine whether a stream or a river is healthy is to sample the macroinvertebrates. Many macroinvertebrates have a narrow range of water quality in which they can survive. Assessments of macroinvertebrate communities are utilized in stream and watershed assessments and are required as part of certain permit applications.
